Untitled by John Fahey from Red Cross album. A cut from eccentric and innovative guiterplayer John Fahey’s last recorded 2003 album ‘Red Cross’, wich came out on his own Revenant label. This one was supposed to come out in 2001 but met with delays due his failing health. A mixture of his older masterpieces like ‘America’ and his later, more agressive electric work...

the ant of the world
This is about as good as it gets with my gear to capture that round thing in the black (which I eliminated just not to be one of those pictures).

Hardware Store Liquidation (meditation)
I go bonkers when I see a hardware store is selling out! Luckily Celia was hanging on to the credit card. I love hardware stores as they are, they don’t need to do anything to draw me in. There’s always something to buy, always! So when there’s a shop closing down with big discount signs screaming for my attention, resistance is futile. Everything looks useful, of course...

this is the ant
Days like these. Nothing is wrong with days like these, the sun comes up, the sun goes down. The temperature is nice, not too hot, just enough wind. One does a number of useful things. All is well. Until getting out at sunset with my camera, the worst idea ever. As if I was going to capture something worth while. Sure, the sun was setting right in the west just straight down the long street that...

comments!
I installed a commenting function on my posts. When you click on a blog post title or on the date of a post, you’ll see that a commenting box pops up at the bottom. You can also share posts on facebook or Twitter if you like… : ) Just was out, on an impulsive bike ride aiming to take some pictures. Quickly found out after taking my camera out of its’ bag that there was no...

FTTB (from to to bottom) Two Italian Ladies in Corrimal. For some reason all the italian woman older then 65 have the same hair here (or in Corrimal at least). This makes them very easy to recognise. (lens 35mm F2 prime) My ex-neighbour watching TV at night (notice the same sort of haircut) (lens 200mm F4 prime) A little reptile surrounded by some D.O.F. (depth of field) taken during...

Took both pictures while riding our bikes back to Belconnen from our zen-meditation class in Ainsley. I have been looking at a lot of photographs by American photographers (I have just been looking at lots of photographs) and apparently fairly influenced looking at these two shots. Still so much to learn, I really need to start walking up to people to get some portrait shots. Yesterday was...

This is sprouted grain bread we made. It consists of one ingredient, sprouted wheat grains. The grains only take a couple of days to sprout small tails. They are then mixed in a food processor, formed into a ball then placed in an oven proof bowl. This is cooked on low heat for 8 hours in a slow cooker. And presto! you have yourself a dense whole-grain loaf. It has a slight sweetness and the...

Close to 35 degrees today, a tiny bit of wind. Bone dry heat, like a hot air fan blowing at full power in your face. Tomorrow close to 40. Went out in the night again. Around the lake this time, no-one around. Some lights in the park surrounding the lake have motion sensors, neat. I enjoyed the seemingly aimless riding around on my bike looking for something worth to set up my three leg for....

First night out. Limited myself to a couple of minutes and a couple of yards from the house. I was still pretty apprehensive as everything is new here. Can I put my tripod in the middle of an abandoned parking lot without being noticed? I have to reposition myself in this new environment, claim my ground. It’s very exciting being in new surroundings with a camera, too many impressions, too...

Linkin (in the picture) wants me to join his team in Counter Strike, a first-person shooter he plays online together with two other housemates. “Flying Dutchmen has to join the army”. Since he uses a PC for his gaming, and since I’m using a mac there are some compatibilty issues to get the game installed on my mac (I’m not gonna go in to details). So Linkin is mailing...

One of my housemates doing a light-painting with a zippo. One of the benefits of sharing a house with other people is the availability of models. I could not help introducing my camera to Helena and Linkin (English names they choose themselves) and giving them a brief introduction to photography which they appreciated very much. The temperature in Canberra is remarkably colder then at the...

Belconnen, Canberra. I haven’t left the house yet. Celia went out with her mum to see the exhibition of part of the collection of Paris’s musée d’Orsay in the Canberra Museum. I stay put and wait for the internet to come to me, only then I will truly feel at home. I’ll try to recount our miniature exodus. We left the coastline around noon and drove about 300 km land...

arrivederci Corrimal.
L’ultimo giorno in Corrimal. Candidly snapped this paparazzi shot of my Italian neighbour (with my 200 mm). She was spraying really toxic insecticide or fungicide onto her plants (so much for the organic aspect of her crop). I remember she told me she severely poisoned herself more then once spraying this stuff… When I started this blog last year we were really good friends...

We got this card in the mail today. It’s from the guest family she stayed with while in Japan last July. Funny since she’s featuring on the card! They also received our card and thought it was very “suteki” (phonetical spelling) meaning cool in Japanese. They invited us both to come and visit them again in Kawasaki. I can wait!

Last weekend, while walking though Sydney with my sister at night, we ran into this meat. It was hanging in the display window of an organic butcher. I had never seen such a display before, something dead trying to sell itself under a pink light. 2010 will be the year I stop eating meat. Just having read Jonathan Saffron Foer’s ‘Eating Animals’, was the last motivation I...

The boots came with a little tag with a short description. “Gorgeous vintage handmade custom boots made by Mercedes of Rios in San Antonio, Texas. These are a rare and expensive buffalo hide in basic black. They have neat medium toes with fancy toebugs & the trademark brogue holes on the tongues. They have simple but classic single row stitching. Real classy.” I couldn’t...

The day before yesterday I was at my mate David’s place. Dave’s father was an avid Western collector. Because the family is moving house they’re selling a part of his collection. With my camera I captured all the bits an pieces, ranging from sheriff-stars to authentic tomahawks.  Every time I visited Dave’s place I was in awe for this impressive collection and especially...

About a year and a half ago, I started manipulating (read torturing) this poor little wild fig tree into becoming a bonsai. I basically twisted some copper wire around some of the twigs. This winter it seemed like it had died. So I cut back the only twig (the main feature twig). Great was my joy as this spring new buds presented itself. I had numerous bonsai in Belgium, bonsai is probably a big...

Clouds, I can’t get over clouds. Even though every picture I take of them is corny.  Yesterdays clouds had a sliver lining, yea like in the song and in the proverb. It’s such a powerful metaphor. Just looking at it, the hopefulness of an air show like this is overwhelming.

I’m sitting in the library again trying to do some work, there’s too many people in here to focus. A woman with a island accent (a different island than this one) is reading a childrens’ book out loud to some kids. The last week in Corrimal, the end of a chapter. Through the window next to me the escarpment watches over me. Two years this has been my battleground, my first...

I love green surfaces that simulate grass. Something about seeing fake grass makes me very happy, green carpet has a simular effect. In Belgium I used to have a 4 * 3 meter plastic green imitation grass rug. Greens are definately my favorite colors.

This opossum was crawling around in Glebe Point road the other night, he seemed a bit confused, maybe he was new to the area… I never got that close to one as that night. Normally they are quite shy these nocturnal creatures.

People who know me, know that I’m sort of addicted to “Thuis”, a Belgian (Flemish) soap series. Thuis has been going for over 10 years (I think). And thanks to a guy (or a girl) who uploads each episode onto his or hers YouTube channel, I am able to keep track of all my favorite characters. “Thuis” is the dutch word for “home” as in “at...

Thursday eve, Celia, my sister Liesbet and my sister-in-law Hannah, went to Tetsuya’s. This is Sydney’s nr 1 restaurant (and also in the top 20 restaurants in the whole world). We booked about five months in advance to get a table. But man it was more than worth it. It was without a shadow of a doubt the most excellent dining experience I have ever lived through in my life. ...

under her wings
Yesterday I met up with another key-figure of the Wollongong Pictorial Mafia namely Vanessa Pike-Russell (visit her Flickr photostream). Vanessa was the kind lady who lent me her studio light for my formal shoot in November. I met up with Vanessa and her husband Phil at their place at Lake Illawarra. From there we walked to Windang beach. At Windang Island me and Phil had a close encounter...

These are two panorama’s of a storm approaching this afternoon, it looked like a cyclone. Like a dark grey veil was pulled over the entire area. At the end of this cloudy tunnel the blue sky seemed surreal. What followed was a brief intense rainfall. I enhanced the contrasts to give the clouds maximum expression. Also I used a yellow filter for the BW pano. In the BW one below you can...

Yesterday, to celebrate the end of old & beginning of the new, we went to the Nan Tien Temple in Unanderra, the largest Buddist temple in the Southern hemisphere. Quite an a-typical way to celebrate NY’s eve. We didn’t drink a drop of alcohol, just listened to mantra’s and did a pilgrimage walk. It was like being in a different country, very surreal. The different halls...
